When we moved into our home we wanted to get the carpets professionally cleaned, but the cost of it and the inconvenience of having people trampling through our home whilst trying to move and having a six month old baby put us off! Whilst looking into alternatives I discovered the Rug Doctor. The Rug Doctor is essentially a machine which you can rent that uses cleaning fluid, hot water and a vibrating brush to clean the carpet and then a vacuum to suck the water and dirt away.

I decided to give the Rug Doctor a try, we could rent one at the local supermarket and it all seemed quite straightforward. It was a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional company to clean and seeing as we had not yet moved our furniture into the house it would be quite easy for me to nip round the empty rooms with the machine.

The machine was easy to use, first you hoover your carpets, and then use a bucket to mix hot water with the Rug Doctor carpet detergent (I purchased mine at the same time as renting the machine) then tip this into the machine. You just have to pull the machine backwards, holding down the spray button to shoot out the cleaning mixture. The only other thing you need to do is empty the dirty water when it has been through the machine.

There is also a hand held tool which can be used for cleaning upholstery, stairs etc. Although we didn’t use the hand held unit for furniture, it was very easy to use on the stairs and was really useful for some of the tight corners which are a bit narrow for the main machine. It is worth noting that you must purchase a different cleaning fluid to use for furnishings.

The previous owners of our house were smokers and we are not, so eliminating the cigarette odour from the house was really important to us. I found that the Rug Doctor went quite far in getting rid of the smell, as it was obviously embedded into the carpet! As the Rug Doctor disturbed the carpet we could smell cigarette smoke, so it was obviously hidden deep into the pile. The house smelled much fresher after we had cleaned the carpet thoroughly.

The most shocking thing for me was the colour of the water when I washed it away. I couldn’t believe the amount of dirt that had been settled into the carpet and was so pleased I had used the Rug Doctor to get rid of it before letting my six month old crawl around the floor! There were a couple of stains on the new carpet which we had expected to be permanent, but the Rug Doctor took them out in just a few minutes. At a cost of about £40, with the added convenience of picking it up whilst shopping at my local supermarket, this really seemed like a bargain to me.

I have a cream carpet and there was hardly any dirt actually visible, other than a few stains. The amount of grime which came out of the carpet showed me how much hidden dirt there is and I will never trust that a carpet is cleaned just because it looks it!

I will definitely be renting the Rug Doctor at regular intervals – especially now that my Daughter is weaning and attempting to feed herself!  I am also planning to use the hand held unit for cleaning up my sofas, if they come up as clean as the carpet did it would be more cost effective for me to rent a rug doctor every so often than to buy a new suite!!
